Contouring and Reshaping Teeth

Dental reshaping and contouring is an inexpensive way to improve the general appearance of your teeth. Subtle changes are made to alter the size, form, and surface of the teeth in order to give an even and pleasing look.

If you wish to make your teeth look smoother, better-shaped, or less crowded, this might be the procedure for you.

In this article, our oral care experts at City Family Dental and Implant Centre in Modesto, California, describe the procedure, its benefits, and drawbacks.

Process of Reshaping and Contouring

First, an X-ray is taken to determine the location and size of the pulp of the teeth to be worked on. Then, using a drill or a laser, the dentist gently removes tooth enamel to trim excessively long teeth or change the shape of irregular teeth.

The teeth are then smoothed and polished. If needed, bonding is done using a resin to fill in cracks, add shape, or improve color. Depending on how much work is required, reshaping can take about 30 minutes. So does the bonding, which needs to harden.

The procedure might require several appointments if a lot of teeth have to be treated.

Post Procedure Care

Reshaping and contouring might thin down the enamel of the teeth. So, you need to avoid the use of abrasive substances for cleaning your teeth and brush with care so as not to damage the remaining enamel. You should also be careful when having hot or cold foods and drinks as you may temporarily experience tooth sensitivity.

Remember to maintain excellent oral hygiene and get routine dental checkups.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages of contouring and reshaping are:

  • If the work required is not extensive, the procedure can be completed in less than an hour.
  • The procedure is painless and does not involve any discomfort.
  • It is a relatively inexpensive treatment.
  • It can also correct minor teeth overlapping issues, eliminating the need to get braces.
  • The results are permanent.
Some of the disadvantages are:
  • Temporary tooth sensitivity after the procedure.
  • Since the enamel can thin down due to its partial removal, there might be a risk of breakage or other damage.
  • Tooth contouring and reshaping are ideal for correcting minor teeth imperfections and produce quick and noticeable results.
